Fr. Stephen Sanchez, OCD

Father Stephen Sánchez, O.C.D.


Born and raised in San Antonio, TX in the last century to Juan Sánchez and Teresa Martinez de Sánchez, Fr. Stephen is one of four siblings of whom three remain. Among those remaining, Fr. Stephen is the only practicing Catholic – so far.

He attended Catholic Schools throughout his academic life: St. Agnes Elementary, Christ the King Elementary, Holy Cross High School, and one and a half years at the University of Texas in San Antonio as a pre-med student.

Fr. Stephen was accepted into the Monastery of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Thérèse in San Antonio in February of 1983. He made his Solemn Profession of Vows in 1989. His Priestly Ordination took place in 1992 at the Basilica and National Shrine of St. Thérèse and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, San Antonio, TX.

In 1987, he earned a B.A. in Psychology with minor in Philosophy from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. In 1992, he earned a Master of Divinity from the Oblate School of Theology, also in San Antonio, TX.

Fr. Stephen undertook an intensive academic year course (1992-1993) in the Spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross in Avila, Spain at the ‘Centro Internacional de Avila’ [currently known as CITeS].

He has served the province as Vocation Director from 1993 to 1996 and as Superior of Marylake in Arkansas from 1996 to 2002.

He has been involved for several years in the formation program for the Permanent Diaconate program of the Diocese of Dallas and also serves as adjunct Spiritual Director for Holy Trinity Seminary also in Dallas.

Fr. Stephen has served the Discalced Carmelites of the Province of St. Thérèse in various administrative positions and is at the moment serving the Order as Superior of the Mt. Carmel Center in Dallas, TX since 2002. The Center serves the Diocese of Dallas and surrounding areas through its retreat ministry, conferences on spirituality, chaplains to the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge, the Catholic Charismatic Community of God’s Delight, as well as serving as Spiritual Directors to many in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
